DAUGHTERS OF CHARITY
OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
INTERNATIONAL PROJECT SERVICES
The Sisters in Thigio manage several programs serving impoverished families, women, children, youth, the elderly, persons living with disabilities, and patients with HIV and/or cancer. Through their varied ministries, about 200 people receive prepared food each day. The kitchen used for food preparation is inadequate as it was built to only serve about 40 people, is made from iron sheets, and uses wood burning stoves. The Kenyan government is discouraging the use of wood and charcoal for cooking and it is only a matter of time before these methods are officially banned. This project will allow for the renovation and improvement of the kitchen area by installing a new biogas system, expansion and painting of the kitchen, and replacing the water tank. By installing a biogas system, the Sisters will reduce dependence on wood and decrease levels of carbon fuels and reduce cooking costs. The old water collection tank which acts as a backup water source during droughts and is used daily during meetings and educational sessions will be replaced.
