OUTREACH MUSIC PROGRAM FOR VULNERABLE YOUTH

Jaboatao-Pernambuco, BRAZIL

Project Description

The Daughters of Charity arrived in this community of Socorro - Jaboatão dos Guararapes neighborhood in 1932, to provide education to poor girls. The population has little education, low income, and no local investment from public authorities. The people make their living as street workers and day laborers, without fixed employment. Crime, violence, and drugs are constant threats especially for children, adolescents, and youth. The Daughters of Charity facility in a suburban area of Recife has four rooms that the Sisters plan to use for the new program entitled "Music and Life." The project goal is to provide music education to the children and young people as a method to steer them away from crime, drugs, and violence. Also, the opportunity to get involved with music and local culture can contribute to professional development and access to the job market, giving them opportunities for social advancement and personal development. The program was developed in response to the requests of parents of students at the elementary school, as a necessity for filling the free time of young children and adolescents of the Socorro neighborhood.
