DAUGHTERS OF CHARITY
OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
INTERNATIONAL PROJECT SERVICES
Uttar Pradesh offers limited employment opportunities in fields other than agriculture making residents dependent on seasonal agricultural work. About 30% of the population lives in poverty which has led to frequent migration to other states and cities in search of a stable and adequate income. The literacy rate is very low in this rural area, especially for women. As a result, women often have poor self-image in society with no voice in social, economic, and political decisions. Furthermore, schools are not distributed equally throughout the state as there is a concentration in urban areas and an insufficient number in rural areas. Expensive private schools offer students a quality education, but poor children cannot afford to attend. Youngsters from impoverished backgrounds must resort to public schools, where educational quality is typically lacking. Consequently, poor students often require extra tutoring to pass board exams. The Daughters of Charity have responded to this situation by providing tutoring in English, science, math, and other various subjects to local students. The number of children and youth seeking this service is now increasing. Adults who are illiterate or school dropouts are also seeking educational support from the Sisters. This project will allow for the establishment of a more organized and structured tutoring program which will reach 50 children and youth, as well as adults in three villages with literacy classes.
