SKILLS TRAINING AND CAPACITY BUILDING FOR WOMEN + YOUTH

Bonga Keffa, ETHIOPIA

Project Description

The majority of the population of the Bonga Kaffa area in southern Ethiopia work as subsistence farmers on small parcels of land under harsh conditions. In this rural area there is little opportunity for needed employment particularly for women and youth. The Sisters' social services program at the Bonga Center includes informal skill training which includes educational sponsorship, savings and credit, embroidery and sewing, basic computer training, dairy farming, and woodworking. All activities are to help underprivileged women and youth achieve the ability to provide for themselves through education and skills development. The Sisters are seeking support to broaden their program and increase the number of participants. Expansion will include helping trainees set up their own businesses through small loans and registration in groups to become “associations.”
