DAUGHTERS OF CHARITY
OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
INTERNATIONAL PROJECT SERVICES
The Akamuri Center strives to help mentally and physically disabled individuals reach autonomy and social integration through different levels of communication and psychomotor stimulation. The establishment welcomes children and young adults with varied disabilities including epilepsy, cerebral palsy and mental retardation. Since their arrival in Bujumbara in 2007, this has been one of the ministries of the Daughters of Charity to help serve these marginalized youth. In order to improve the educational and rehabilitative services offered, it was essential that the Akamuri facility expand so they could reduce large class sizes and improve outcomes. This project constructed four additional classrooms which now benefit 72 children and young adults who are mentally and physically challenged.
