ESTABLISH A MATERNITY UNIT AT BISHOP JAMES MEMORIAL RURAL HEALTH CENTER

Jalpaiguri, INDIA

Project Description

In this poor area in Jalpaiguri, the local people, mostly day laborers, asked the Bishop for a local accessible hospital. In 2003 the Daughters of Charity began preparing for this ministry and finally opened the small health center known as Bishop James Memorial Rural Health Care Center in 2006, which includes outpatient facilities. The district in predominantly Hindu and Muslim, and the Health Center serves all people. The district has government facilities; however, they are insufficient with a ratio of 4 beds per 1000 and 1 doctor per 10,000 persons. There are other private facilities to fill the gap, however, these are expensive and inaccessible to low-income people. This is the beneficiary target of the Daughters of Charity. Affordable and accessible health care is lacking in this rural area for maternal child health service particularly serving those who are poor. For this reason, the Daughters of Charity have developed plans to construct and furnish a maternity unit for their existing hospital, which will extend services for antenatal and postnatal care. The anticipated direct beneficiaries are between 1,460 to 2,190 persons annually. The Sisters already have an antenatal educational outreach program in place within the community.
